06 Oct Action Alert: Universal Single Payer Pharmacare Program
This fall, we have the opportunity to, at long last, get a national pharmacare program. The continued support of the federal NDP for the minority Liberal government is contingent on parliament passing pharmacare legislation before the end of 2023. Let’s make sure they do it and get it right.
Join us! Call on Prime Minister Trudeau to table legislation this fall for universal, single-payer pharmacare!
Per capita, Canadians spend more on drugs than any country other than the US, Germany and Malta. Yet, approximately eight million Canadians have no drug coverage at all. The result:
• one in five Canadians struggle to pay for their prescription medications
• three million Canadians are unable to fill their prescriptions
• hundreds of thousands of Canadians are forced to choose medicine over food and heat
The absence of pharmacare in Canada places an unnecessary burden on our already strained health system. According to the “Final report of the Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare” – the Hoskins Report – universal, single-payer pharmacare would eliminate 220,000 emergency visits and 90,000 hospitalizations, annually.
Join us! Tell Prime Minister Trudeau that it’s time for universal, single-payer pharmacare!
