Medication interactions as an outcome of polypharmacy have long-term consequences on the health and well-being of older adults. One approach to addressing the harmful effects of polypharmacy is deprescribing. This presentation provides an overview of the nurse’s role in deprescribing by:

  • Examining facts about the problem of unnecessary or potentially harmful drugs in older adults and why deprescribing is a potential solution
  • Identifying concrete ways for nurses to become active in safe deprescribing for older adults across the care continuum
  • Discussing the utilization of deprescribing tools and resources available to support nursing practice
  • Demonstrating effective communication techniques to engage patients and their caregivers in the deprescribing process
